This recipe for stewed apples is too easy, but we love it because you can serve it on porridge, with yogurt or you can use it as a filling for a sweet apple pie. As Granny Smith apples are quite tart, we add a touch of maple syrup for sweetness. But you can certainly use a sweeter apple variety such as Golden Delicious in lieu of the syrup.
What you will need:
4-5 granny smith apples
1/2 cup sultanas
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 clove
1/2 lemon squeezed
2cm lemon rind
1/2 cup of water
1/4 cup maple syrup (optional)
This recipe can be made using the thermomix or on the stovetop.
Peel and slice the apples into thick wedges. Place them into the thermomix bowl or into a saucepan.
Add all the other ingredients.
Thermomix:
Set the lid and measuring cup on the bowl.
12 minutes / 100 degrees / Reverse speed .5.
Saucepan:
Cook on medium heat with the lid on for 2-3 minutes. Then remove the lid and cook for a further 7 minutes. You may need to continue stirring to ensure the apples do not stick to the bottom of the saucepan.
Store your stewed apples in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.
